Why I Can’t Be Basic

In my opinion the term “Basic” as it pertains to women does not apply to Black Women. It is impossible for us to be basic, and I will tell you why.

No matter your background, economic status, level of education, sexual orientation…the black woman is always everything for everybody.

Malcolm X said, “The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman, the most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.”

It doesn’t matter if you have three degrees, or zero. At some point in your life your style will be appropriated. You will be expected to act sassy and take no shit. You will be tasked with providing for your family with or without assistance. You will be viewed as a sexual object. You will be exocticized. You will be politicized. You will be ostracized. You will be accused of being too independent. You will be a mother, a daughter, and a sister, many times to people outside of your relative circle. You will cook, clean, go to school, raise your kids, and go to church with grace. You will be tired, and you will continue to push on with fortitude and resilience. You will be disrespected by the white man. You will be disrespected by the black man. You will be envied  by the white woman. You will be envied by the black woman.

You will be everything.

We are everything to everybody…

So no, I am no Basic Bitch. You better ask somebody…
